Sometimes you just need to know what a rock is made of - be it natural or man made.  In many cases,
a thin section prepared from a sample will offer details that go beyond what can be done by XRD or
SEM analysis.  Whereas XRD may give the bulk mineral properties of a rock, thin section analysis
reveals how the rock is put together.  In the case of man-made stone products, we may be able to
reconstruct the ingredients and source of materials used in historic structures - maybe even help
explain why structures fall apart!
